Stratford High School senior and Troop Number 3204 member Madison Reagin completed herGirl Scout Gold Award Project in an effort to save the bees. Madison’s goal was to address the risk of bees going extinct. From the start of the project, Madison knew teaching the next generation why protecting these insects is important and beneficial to humans was going to be her approach to fighting the issue. She created online educational materials aimed to give everyone an, “opportunity to learn about bees in a fun way.” Because the materials are totally accessible online and can be altered or personalized, Madison hopes her project will reach beyond her town’s city limits.

With Cypress Gardens employee Nick Yoder as her project advisor, Madison was able to gain insight from a naturalist and bee specialist point of view as she produced her curriculum materials. For Madison, the hardest part of the project was COVID restrictions, but she was able to successfully pivot her plan and continue to achieve the Gold Award. As a result, Cypress Gardens, Bee City, Charleston County Parks, and the Lowcountry Beekeepers Association have all agreed to put up bee homes and use different parts of Madison’s curriculum.
