Abigail is from Troop 150 in Myrtle Beach. She earned her Gold Award on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Her project was called “Artfully Aging.” Abigail worked with the non-profit organization Neighbor to Neighbor where she created an art curriculum for senior citizens. This program was a 5-week program and the participants focused on a different style or method of art each week, ranging from Acrylic Flower Paintings to Collage Art to Mason Jar Candlelight’s. The program was designed to be easy for any other group or organization to pick it up and implement it. Artfully Aging worked against the psycho-social problems of senior citizen abandonment and isolation. By getting senior citizens out of their houses to use art as an outlet, the Artfully Aging group was able to form relationships over the five weeks. This had a positive impact on their overall mood and mental health. Participants enjoyed that the program was something fun and different from the normal mundane tasks they were left with at home. They were thrilled to be able to get out and stretch their talents while watching their social circles and art skills grow. Abigail says it is so rewarding to see this group have art and that opportunity to create and socialize bring a smile to their faces, put a new glimmer or sparkle in their eyes and open up a new resiliency and joy within their spirits, With the addition of art in their lives and getting in touch with the artist within they indeed painted beautiful works to illustrate how they blossomed and flourished. Abigail has received her Gold Award and is one of our distinguished Gold Award Girl Scouts.
